Spiritual Direction

Who...
A spiritual director listens to the person's story with an ear to the movement of God. She explores with the person:

  • The signs and meaning of God's activity in his/her life;
  • The direction God seems to be calling him/her;
  • His/her on-going relationship with God.

God is the ultimate director...the spiritual director companions the person on his/her journey.

What...
Spiritual direction is a centuries old practice in Christianity. It is the art of listening in the context of a trusting relationship. It provides an opportunity for an individual to:

  • Talk about his/her life;
  • Share his/her experience of God's presence and action in his/her life;
  • Grow in his/her relationship with God...and the ways of discovering God with a person specially trained in the area of spiritual direction.

When...
Directees usually attend one hour sessions once a month. However, sessions can be held more frequently during times of crisis, major change or transition for the directee upon request.

Where...
Spiritual direction is held in an appropriate setting designated by the spiritual director.

Why...
The reasons for choosing spiritual direction are many and varied.

  • An individual's spiritual hunger and search for meaning in life;
  • There is a need and desire to grow and deepen one's relationship with God;
  • Like any good relationship, there is constant change and growth;
  • The support received while being accompanied on the spiritual journey.

Benefits...
Spiritual direction is an opportunity to share one's inner life in a confidential setting with a trusted listener. Many directees have expressed the following benefits:

  • A sense of inner calm and peace;
  • A sense of direction in one's life;
  • A sense of living a deeper and fuller life;
  • A sense of living in the wonder, awe and mystery of God.

Cost for spiritual direction through the Spirituality Center is based on a sliding scale of $30-$45. Contact individual spiritual directors to find out what they charge per session.

Group spiritual direction is now available!

For some people individual spiritual direction is helpful. Others may find group spiritual direction meets their needs. During the group time together there is a call upon the Spirit for guidance, Scripture reflection, silence, sharing, and prayer together. The most important element in group spiritual direction is the contemplative stance of presence to God for one another within the group and prayer for one another outside the meeting. Meeting times are set up for convenience of the group. If you are interested in being a part of a group, contact S. Maureen Heverin, SC at 513-347-1408.
