Artistic Expressions: S. Mildred Shaver
(1922 –2014)

S. Mildred (Millie) Shaver was born in Lansing, Michigan, and attended St. Mary Grade and High School; she was one of seven children growing up during the Depression; they relied heavily on the family garden to get them through those difficult years. S. Millie earned degrees in English (BA from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati) and a master’s from the University of Detroit. She ministered in the classroom for 35 years in Ohio, Colorado and Michigan. This included Sacred Heart, Denver, Colorado; St. Bernard, Springfield, Ohio; Holy Name, Cleveland, Ohio; as well as both Marian and Seton high schools in Cincinnati. Beginning in 1977 S. Millie found a new calling, being attracted to pastoral ministry, first serving in a parish and then moving to pastoral care in several hospitals including St. Joseph, Mount Clemens, Michigan. She retired from pastoral duties in 1994, but remained in Michigan, volunteering in a variety of settings. She brought a ‘forever smile’ to whatever and wherever she went. Writing poetry was a form of relaxation from her earliest years and this continued throughout her 92 years. Besides needlework, quiet prayer and watching college basketball she enjoyed being a good friend to many.
